Tenants Victoria services

All our services are free. Some are available to all renters, while others depend on your circumstances.

Our office is closed from 4:30 pm on 23 December until we reopen on 5 January.   • Renter Support Line

    For all Victorian renters.

    Free legal information for all renters, and legal advice if you are eligible.

    The approximate waiting time is more than 30 minutes.

    9:30 am – 12:30 pm and 2:30–4:30 pm, Monday to Friday

    On Tuesdays we are now open until 6:30 pm.

  • Social Housing and Rooming House Priority Line

    For Victorian renters in public housing, community housing and rooming houses.

    Free legal information, referrals and advice.

    9:30 am – 12:30 pm and 2:30–4:30 pm, Monday to Friday

  • Repairs Toolkit

    For all Victorian renters.

    Information about your rights and online help to draft written repair requests and apply to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) if repairs are not completed.

  • Community Worker Tenancy Service

    For community workers assisting people who rent in Victoria.

    Free legal information, advice and support for community workers.

    To book a 30-minute phone appointment, complete the community worker tenancy service form.

    This service is for community workers only.

  • Community Worker Referral Form

    For community workers assisting people who rent in Victoria.

    Community workers can use this form to seek to refer renters to us.

    Capacity constraints mean we are unable to accept all referrals – the form suggests other ways for renters to get support.

  • Education and training enquiries

    For community groups and organisations, educational institutions, and non-profit, government and commercial entities.

    Our education and training team runs customised renter-rights information sessions and workshops.

  • Office administration

    Our admin staff support Tenants Victoria with general business operation. They cannot provide advice about renting.

Support if you are deaf or find it hard to hear or speak on the phone

You can contact us through the National Relay Service (NRS).

  1. To use the service, register with the NRS.
  2. Then contact the NRS using your preferred method: NRS call numbers and links.
  3. Give the NRS officer the phone number of the service you want on this page.
  4. The NRS officer will call the number and you can communicate with the service through them.

Speak to us in your language

    For all Victorians.

    Free information and advice on renter rights and rental processes. Also receives formal complaints about rental providers (such as landlords, real estate agents, rooming house operators, caravan park owners and Homes Victoria).

  • Crisis accommodation services

    For all Victorians.

    Urgent accommodation if you are homeless or at risk of homelessness, escaping family violence, or need somewhere to stay after an emergency.

    24 hours a day, 7 days a week

  • Federation of Community Legal Centres

    For all Victorians.

    Free legal information for everyone, and legal advice and help at court if you are eligible.

    Each of the 49 community legal centres in Victoria decides on eligibility for its services.

  • Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG)

    For Victorians aged 50 and older.

    Free and confidential information, advice and practical housing support for older people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

    10 am – 4 pm, Monday to Friday

  • Rental Dispute Resolution Victoria (RDRV)

    For all Victorians.

    Helps resolve disputes between renters and rental providers (such as landlords, rooming house operators, caravan park owners and Homes Victoria) without needing a formal VCAT hearing. This free service deals with disputes about bonds, compensation, repairs and rent increases.

  • Tenancy Assistance and Advocacy Program (TAAP)

    For Victorian renters in private rentals, rooming houses and caravan parks who are in financial hardship or affected by family violence.

    Free information and advice on renter rights and resolving disputes.

  • Tenancy Plus

    For Victorian renters in public and community housing.

    Support to stay in housing, including a support plan and connections to services in your local area.

  • Victoria Legal Aid

    For all Victorians.

    Free legal information for everyone, and legal advice and help at court if you are eligible.

    8 am – 6 pm, Monday to Friday

  • Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT)

    For all Victorians.

    Resolves disputes between renters and rental providers (such as landlords, rooming house operators, caravan park owners and Homes Victoria).

  • Victorian Public Tenants Association

    For Victorians who live in public housing or are on the wait list.

    Free counselling, legal advice and help at court for public housing tenants and those on the wait list.
