Out now: our annual report 2023-24
A year of profound challenges for renters
Our 2023-24 Annual Report marks another year of profound challenges for renters, documenting our work to support them across the state while being a strong voice for policy reforms.
Over the past financial year, our intake and legal services directly assisted 6,518 renters, helping them resolve 8,275 rental-related matters.
‘Renting continues to have its moment as one of the primary public policy areas in our state, and as the peak body for renters, Tenants Victoria has been an authoritative advocate over the past year,’ said our CEO Jennifer Beveridge.
‘We must put renters at the centre of the provision of safe, secure, and affordable housing. With close to 30% of Victorians renting their home, this public policy moment is long awaited.’
Website a crucial resource for renters
With 1.49 million page views and over 648,000 unique visitors to our website, our services have continued to expand, reaching renters in need of advice and practical solutions. The most popular topics included:

These figures illustrate the need for accessible, reliable information on navigating the complexities of renting, especially in a time when poor rental affordability and availability put extra stresses on renters.
Advocacy and policy reform
At the heart of our policy work is strong, evidence-based advocacy aimed at influencing reform. Over the past year, we’ve engaged with the Victorian Government and industry stakeholders to shape policies that support fairer rental practices. From advocating for protections against excessive rent increases to contributing to the implementation of the Victorian Housing Statement, our voice has been critical in representing renters’ rights.
Additionally, we have strengthened our collaborations with key partners like the National Association of Renters’ Organisations (NARO), advocating for nationwide reforms to ensure safe, secure, and affordable housing for all Australians.
Looking ahead
In the year of our 50th anniversary in 2024, Tenants Victoria remains steadfast in our mission to support renters. Our new initiatives, such as the launch of the Repairs Toolkit and the development of the Renter Stress Hub, are designed to provide practical resources that empower renters.
As renters face the heightened pressures of the housing crisis, our work is more important than ever. We will continue to provide direct services, advocate for systemic change, and build partnerships that strengthen our ability to serve the renters across the state.
