New video guide for renters going to VCAT

Going to VCAT

At Tenants Victoria, we know that for many renters, going to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) can be overwhelming.

Our new video, ‘Going to VCAT’, walks renters through the entire process – from gathering the necessary documents to understanding what happens during a hearing.

What is VCAT?

VCAT hears disputes between rental providers (landlords) and renters. It is not a court, but it can make decisions that must be followed by rental providers and renters. It is intended to be informal and cheap, and to resolve disputes quickly and fairly.

Find out more on our page, VCAT.

Step-by-step guidance

Even though the process is designed to be straightforward, many renters can find it intimidating. Our new video helps make the process easier and more approachable so that renters feel more confident as they navigate the system.

The video has step-by-step guidance on how to prepare for and go through the VCAT process, giving practical advice along the way.

You can watch the full video or choose from five chapters, depending on your circumstances:

Chapter 1: Introduction to VCAT – An overview of what VCAT is and how it works

Chapter 2: Applying to VCAT – Instructions on how to apply and what documentation you will need

Chapter 3: Preparing for your hearing – Tips on gathering evidence and getting ready for the hearing

Chapter 4: Your hearing – What to expect during the hearing and how to present your case

Chapter 5: The order – What happens after the hearing
